Hints for slower
computers
If you have an older computer, then the following
suggestions may be useful in speeding up the program.
- Hint: Remember that you can
save an option set (or several) so that you can use one
option set for speeding around, and another for nicer
views.
- Note: Options that will have a
more significant effect on performance are marked with a
asterisk (*).
Monitors control panel of your Macintosh
- Make sure that the number of colors is set to 256.*
(However, Starry Night does look amazing in thousands and
millions of colors... a good reason to upgrade your
computer!)
Preferences Dialog
- Turn off dynamic scrolling*
- Turn off sound effects*
- Turn Off Show Viewport in info windows*
- Sun halo - use "never".
Options
- All option panels should have "Less Detail When
Scrolling"*
Planet Options
Surface tab:
- Turn off Rendered Surface*
- Turn off Show Cast Shadows (Note: you will not see
eclipses with this option off.)
Orbits tab:
- Turn off Enhanced Orbits*
Paths tab:
- Turn on "Hide Paths While Scrolling"
Comet Options (Images tab)
- Make the tails draft quality or turn them off (they
look so nice, though!).
Messier Options (Images tab)
- Make images draft quality or turn them off*
Horizon Options (Images tab)
Either hide scenery while scrolling* or turn scenery
off*.
