Ecliptic guides are based on the ecliptic, which is the
plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun, and are measured
by the celestial latitude and celestial longitude. The
celestial latitude is measured from 0 at the ecliptic to 90
North and -90 South at the ecliptic poles. The celestial
longitude, also in degrees, is measured from the Vernal
equinox eastward.
Ecliptic guides can be toggled on and off via the Guides
menu or Display palette.
- Note: The Ecliptic guides
button will be inactive if none of the ecliptic guides
have been selected.
Options for the Ecliptic Guides
To turn on or off additional guides: a reference plane,
and the ecliptic meridian, equator and poles, open the
Options dialog by selecting "Options..." from the Settings
menu, then pick "Ecliptic Guides" from the popup menu.
Alternatively, click the options
button for Ecliptic Guides in the Display palette.
Show Ecliptic Guides: This checkbox performs a
similar function to the Guides/Ecliptic Guides menu command.
Check this box if you want ecliptic guides shown. Note: The
checkbox will be dimmed unless one of the ecliptic guides
has been selected.
Hide While Scrolling: To improve performance, you
can check this box so that ecliptic guides are turned off
while scrolling.
Ecliptic Poles: When checked, displays the
ecliptic poles.
Reference Plane: When checked, an ecliptic
reference plane is displayed, with the Sun at its
center.
Equator and Meridian
Ecliptic Equator: When checked, the
ecliptic equator is displayed.
Ecliptic Meridian: When checked, the ecliptic
meridian is displayed.
Set Color: By clicking on this button, you can
select a new color for the ecliptic equator and ecliptic
meridian guides.
Grid: Checking this box turns an ecliptic grid on,
and allows you to adjust how the grid is displayed. Checking
the "Number Grids" checkbox will display the celestial
latitude and celestial longitude number of each
gridline.
Set Color: By clicking on this button, you can
select a new color for the ecliptic guides.
